A car bomb went off in a suburb of the Syrian capital Friday, the state-run agency said, but did not give any toll. Opposition activists however said at least 20 people had been killed.

The blast in the northwestern suburb of Wadi Barada killed the "terrorists" who were booby-trapping the car as well as some innocent civilians, said Syria's official news agency SANA, without giving more details, reported Xinhua.

The blast in Wadi Barada was caused by two explosive-laden cars detonated near a mosque at a marketplace, a pro-government radio said.

Meanwhile, Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the blast resulted in the death of 20 people, while another activist group said another explosive-laden vehicle was dismantled near a mosque in al-Hameh suburb.
