Indian multi-national Carborundum Universal Ltd (CUMI), a major in abrasives, ceramics and other products, on Thursday said it has opened three new fusion plants in Cochin in Kerala.

In a statement here, the Murugappa Group company said the three new fusion plants were set up at the firm's electro-mineral complex at Cochin.

With the new facilities -- a Zirconia Bubble Fusion Plant and two Alumina Fusion Plants, CUMI's Cochin complex has become one of the most advanced and integrated electro-mineral complexes in the world.

"The new facilities, estimated at Rs 80 crore investment funded through internal accruals, at full capacity will add about 25,000 tonnes of fused minerals generation, with potential sales of about $30 million," Executive Chairman of Murugappa Group A. Vellayan was quoted as saying in the statement.
