Afraid of being jailed, a man, who was caught by locals while attempting to break into a house in the city, hanged himself on Saturday, police said.
The incident happened in Bansdroni area of the city.
"Three people tried to break into a flat in the Bramhapur area in Bansdroni when they were spotted by a walker who raised an alarm. While two managed to flee, locals caught this man and locked him inside the house," Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Suburban Division) Santosh Pandey said.
Upon arrival, the police team found the man hanging from the ceiling of the house which had been lying vacant for some time.
"We are yet to ascertain the identity of the man. It seems he might have been apprehensive of landing up in jail which led him to commit suicide," added Pandey.
Police have registered a case of attempted theft and are on the lookout for the other two men.
