To commemorate Indian-origin former British member of parliament late Marsha Singh, the Bradford District Chess Association organised an amateur chess festival in his memory.

The event was held Sunday in Bradford's City Park on the 125th anniversary of the Bradford International Chess Congress, the Telegraph and Argus reported.

Marsha Singh, who died last year, was the MP for Bradford West and a keen chess player. Grand Master Gawain Jones, last year's British champion, and four International Masters also took part. The late MP's brothers were also among 125 amateur chess players who took part in the festival.

"My brother was a good player. He would have loved to have taken part in this. I'm sure he would have been confident of winning. It is good that he is being commemorated in this way," Marsha's brother Nirmal was quoted as saying.
