A 3-year-old girl, who was in a critical condition with several needle injuries and a broken arm, has died in West Bengal, a hospital source said on Friday.
The child, a resident of Purulia district, was brought to the SSKM hospital here in a critical condition last week. She was allegedly physically and sexually abused by an elderly person who employs her mother as a domestic help.
"She succumbed to sepsis and pneumonia between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m," the source said.
Police said they have a lodged a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POSCO) Act against Sanatan Thakur, a former home guard and the employer of the girl's mother.
The abuse came to light when the child's mother took her to the Bankura Medical college complaining of cough and cold but the doctors found multiple external injuries on her body, some inflicted by needles, police said.
