The central Chinese city of Zhengzhou will not approve of new high pollution projects in 2016, the latest effort to curb air pollution, the authorities said on Monday.

Zhengzhou, capital of Henan province, was the fifth most-polluted city among 74 major cities nationwide, Xinhua cited the Ministry of Environmental Protection as syaing.

Last July, ministry officials summoned Zhengzhou officials to discuss the pollution.

Steel, cement, plate glass, electrolytic aluminum and nonferrous metals makers are on the banned list, said Liu Junjie, deputy director of the city's environmental protection bureau.

Local authorities will renovate coal-fired power plants and heating boilers to reduce emissions, Liu said.

Heavy smog has become a source of public complaints, prompting authorities to be more serious in tackling air pollution.
