China has welcomed India and Pakistan's latest efforts to achieve a ceasefire on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Wednesday.

Both India and Pakistan are important countries of South Asia and improved relations between them are vital for regional peace and stability, Xinhua quoted Hua as saying at a daily news briefing.

"As a shared neighbour and friend to the two countries, China will as always support them to resolve relevant disputes properly through peaceful dialogue," Hua said.

The directors general of military operation (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan will meet at the Attari-Wagah border Dec 24 to discuss ways to prevent violation of ceasefire on the LoC.

Pakistan DGMO Maj. Gen. Amir Riaz Tuesday invited his Indian counterpart for a meeting to strengthen the mechanisms for ensuring a ceasefire on the LoC. The proposal was accepted by India, sources said.

The decision to hold DGMO-level talks was taken by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif Sep 29 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York.
