Retorting to Narendra Modi's demand for appropriate action on a land deal involving Congress president Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law Robert Vadra, party leaders Monday asked him to "speak with care" as he is the country's prime minister.
Modi, at a poll rally in Haryana Monday, urged the Election Commission to take "appropriate action" over the Haryana government's nod to a controversial land deal between Vadra and real estate giant DLF.
"He (Modi) has forgotten he is now the prime minister. He gives speeches to rouse supporters," Congress leader Salman Khurshid said. "The prime minister should speak with care. There are many people who would question what you say."
Another Congress leader, Anand Sharma said: "I am sure the Haryana government is conscious of law and the Election Commission code... It is the arrogance of power that sense of balance has been lost."
Modi said it was for the poll panel to take cognizance and "appropriate action" in this matter since the state government has violated the Model Code of Conduct by granting the approval ahead of the Oct 15 assembly polls.
The Rs.58-crore land deal between Vadra's company and DLF was earlier cancelled in October 2012 by senior IAS officer Ashok Khemka.
