Congress lawmaker K.B. Koliwad would be the new speaker of the Karnataka assembly, a party official said on Monday.

"Koliwad would be unanimously elected to the speaker's post on Tuesday, as he was the lone member of the house who submitted papers to assembly secretary S. Murthy in Vidhana Soudha earlier in the day," the official told IANS here.

The speaker's post fell vacant after incumbent Kagodu Thimmappa resigned following his induction into the cabinet as revenue minister on June 19.

Koliwad, who represents Ranebennur assembly segment in the state's northwest, is chairman of the house committee to study lake encroachments in Bengaluru.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and cabinet ministers T. B. Jayachandra, Roshan Baig, B. Ramanatha Rai and Thimmappa were present when Koliwad filed papers for the post on the first day of the state legislature's monsoon session here. He will be the 20th speaker of the lower house.
