Police on Monday detained former union minister Ramakant Khalap in a room in the Goa assembly complex here, drawing protests from the opposition Congress in the house.

"Police has confined Khalap to the press room. Give him due respect since he is an ex- MLA. He should not be confined and his movements not restricted," Congress MLA Aleixo Lourenco protested in the assembly.

Protesting the alleged discrimination against his educational institute by the Goa education department, Khalap was stopped by police and marshals while entering the visitors gallery in the assembly.

Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, however, defended the detention of the Congress leader and a former minister in the Deve Gowda-led United Front government.

"A person who has been deputy chief minister and a central minister should understand the sanctity of the assembly precinct. He should not have protested," Parsekar told the assembly.
