Russia lost over 4.4 billion rubles ($133 million) due to corruption in the armed forces, Chief Military Prosecutor Sergei Fridinsky said Thursday.

"The damage inflicted by the corruption-related crimes grew 5.5-fold this year," Xinhua quoted Fridinsky as telling a government meeting.

He added that the number of these crimes had grown 1.5 times compared with the same period of 2012 with over 7,000 violations of laws revealed.

According to the prosecutor, 505 suspects have been brought to justice and a similar number of violators were disciplined.

Two thirds of the crimes and violations were committed by military personnel and the rest by civilians within the armed forces, he said.

The majority of these crimes and violations were committed in areas such as construction and repair work, supply support, communal services in the military garrisons, and false bankruptcies.
