Cough up Rs 1 lakh fine for littering Bengal's civic areas

People residing in West Bengal's civic body areas may be forced to cough up fines up to Rs 1 lakh for littering in public places, as per bills passed by the state legislature raising the penalty for violation of its provisions in regions government by the municipal corporations and municipalities.

On Tuesday, the state Assembly gave the green light to the final two amended bills thereby completing the legislative process on the issue.

The Assembly during the day cleared the West Bengal Municipal Corporation (Second Amendment) Bill, 2018, bringing under its ambit all people living in the municipal corporation areas of the state save Kolkata and Howrah.

The Howrah Municipal Corporation (Second Amendment) Bill, 2018, was also passed in order to benefit the people of Howrah.

Those littering the places would be slapped with a minimum Rs 5000 and maximum Rs 1 lakh as penalties.

On November 22, the legislature had passed an amendment to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (second amendment) Bill, 2018.

The penalty for people living in the city was raised first through an amendment to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (second amendment) Bill, 2018, which was passed in the Assembly on November 22.

So long, the minimum penalty for garbage dumping was Rs 50 and the maximum Rs 5,000.
