A Communist Party of India-Marxist politburo meeting began on Thursday in the state capital to discuss various issues, including demonetisation.

The top brass of the CPI-M is attending the meeting, which will also finalise a strategy for the coming assembly polls in five states to be held from February 4 to March 8.

It is for the first time that the CPI-M politburo and Central Committee are holding meetings in the Kerala capital. In the past, the event has been held as part of the Party Congress.

The second session of the politburo meeting was scheduled later in the day.

On the agenda is a report on alleged indiscipline by party veteran and former Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan who stormed out of a CPI-M conference in 2015. Despite pleas by the present General Secretary Sitaram Yechury and others, he did not return for the meeting in Alappuzha.

Informed sources said the CPI-M, in power in Kerala as part of the Left Democratic Front, will take no step to ruffle the feathers of the veteran communist leader who is lying low.
