Cricket Australia (CA) on Monday announced that Perth Scorchers have been fined following a breach of the salary cap rules applicable to the fifth edition of the KFC Big Bash League (BBL).
"Scorchers breached the allowable team retainer pool of $1.3m by $5,000. CA Code of Conduct Senior Commissioner Gordon Lewis AM determined Scorchers be fined the minimum penalty of $150,000, with $145,000 suspended pending no further breach of the team retainer pool rules for five years," CA said in a statement.
In reaching this decision, it was taken into account that Scorchers self-reported the salary cap breach to CA.
Cricket Australia's Head of Integrity, Iain Roy said: "Following a thorough investigation, we understand that this was not a purposeful breaching of the rules by the Perth Scorchers, and this has been taken into account for the purpose of fixing an appropriate penalty.
"We do however take a proactive, zero-tolerance approach to maintaining the integrity of our sport and this includes any breaches of salary caps in the BBL."
