"In his new role, Ronaldo will fight child hunger and obesity and promote physical activity and healthy eating," a spokesperson for Save The Chidren, India, said in a statement here.

On his part, Ronaldo is all excited about his new role, especially since he is the father of a two-year old son, to whom it is important to have a healthy life right from the start, and wants to give all children that same chance.

"When I learned that one in seven kids around the world go to bed hungry each night, I jumped at the chance to get involved. I want to work with (Save The Children) to make sure that fewer parents will have to struggle with putting the right kinds of food on the table," Ronaldo, captain of Portugal national team, said.

"I also want to encourage kids to get out there, get active and get fit."

He follows in the footsteps of other eminent personalities who are ambassadors for Save The Children, like Jennifer Connelly, Julianne Moore, Shabana Azmi, Parineeti Chopra and Kunal Kapoor.

"Everyday, a child goes without eating healthy foods, it puts the brakes on his growth and development, and want to reach these children before the hunger signs show up and they get in the habit of making unhealthy choices," remarked Save The Children India CEO Thomas Chandy.

Last year, Save The Children reached out to over 85 million kids in around 120 countries with programmes to help them survive, thrive and achieve their potential.

In India, Save The Children works in 14 states benefiting newborns, children and pregnant women.

The spokesperson said that nearly 50 percent of India's children under the age of five are malnourished, placing the nation amongst the bottom three countries, as reported by Save The Children's Nutrition Barometer.
