To check injuries to and deaths of its personnel, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is now planning to use robots for detecting Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) in Maoist-affected areas.

The announcement was made by the CRPF's outgoing chief K. Durga Prasad on Monday at the CRPF headquarters in Delhi.

Prasad, a 1981 batch IPS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre, will retire on Tuesday. He has been Director General of CRPF since February 2, 2016.

"The force is taking technical help from IIT Bombay in trying to procure robots to detect the IEDs in Left Wing Extremist areas," Prasad said.

A CRPF data said that a total of 34 security personnel, including police and CRPF men, were killed in IED and landmine blasts in 2015 while 40 died in 2016.
