Cuban President Raul Castro has appointed Vice Admiral Julio Cesar Gandarilla Bermejo as the Interior Minister.
Gandarilla on Monday succeeded Carlos Fernandez Gondin, who passed away last Saturday, Xinhua news agency reported.
"The Council of State at the proposal of President decided to designate the current first Deputy Minister of the Interior Vice Admiral Julio Cesar Gandarilla Bermejo as minister of that body," a statement said.
Gandarilla was appointed the first Deputy Interior Minister in October 2015, when the then minister Abelardo Colome Ibarra resigned due to serious health problems, and Gondin was elevated.
Gandarilla has served as Chief of the Direction of Military Counter-Intelligence over the past 16 years. He is also a member of the Communist Party Central Committee and the People's Power National Assembly.
