Dacoits shot dead a police sub-inspector in Uttar Pradesh's Chitrakoot district on Thursday, police said.
A police team led by a Superintendent of Police went to a forested region in Manikpur area and ambushed a gang of bandits led by Babuli Kol.
The dacoits fired back, killing Raipura SHO J.P. Singh. He sustained a bullet injury in his chest. He was rushed to a nearby hospital first and then shifted to Karvi where he died.
Raju Kol, a bandit who carried a reward of Rs 10,000 on his head, was arrested. A search operation is on to nab many of the injured dacoits, a senior official said.
Babuli Kol carries a cash reward of Rs 5.5 lakh on his head. According to reports, his close aide, Lavkesh Kol, also sustained injuries in the gun battle.
