World's No.1 batsman AB de Villiers is not sure he would take over as the South African Test captain succeeding Graeme Smith, who will be retiring from international cricket after the third and the final Test against Australia.
De Villiers is the obvious choice to take charge of the world's top-ranked Test side but he remains unsure.
De Villiers, who is the Test vice-captain and ODI captain, said he will have to take a call after a discussion with coach Russel Domingo.
"I'm not sure. We'll have to wait and see what happens. I'll have a few discussions with the coach (Russell Domingo) and team selectors. If it does come my way, it'd be a huge honour," De Villiers told Cricket Australia's TV channel.
Domingo said that Graeme Smith's decision was round the corner since he has been the captain for the last 12 years. Smith took over as captain as a 22-year-old and has led South Africa through 109 Tests - a record.
"I had an inkling that it might be around the corner with what has been happening in his life and it is a lot of pressure doing it for 12 years. I'm not entirely surprised but I am a bit surprised by the timing of it. His presence alone is going to be sorely missed," said Domingo.
