Reigning champions Ajax Amsterdam started the Dutch Eredivisie season with a 4-1 victory over Vitesse.
The 4-1 scoreline, though, was not a fair representation of the match Sunday. Vitesse created several chances, but failed to score. Ajax goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer was in fine form bailing out his team on numerous occasions, reports Xinhua.
Five minutes from half-time Nick Viergever opened the scoring, Lasse Schone added a second goal with a beautiful free kick three minutes after half-time and Mike van der Hoorn headed in the third goal in the 62nd minute.
Six minutes from time Marko Vejinovic produced the consolation goal for Vitesse and Schone concluded with a fourth goal in the 87nd minute.
"I am glad we have a good goalkeeper," Ajax coach Frank de Boer said afterwards. "We gave away five hundred chances."
Also Sunday Feyenoord beat ADO Den Haag 1-0. Substitute Mitchell Te Vrede was the match winner with an injury-time goal. ADO played with ten men for 50 minutes after a second yellow card for Mitchell Schet.
