The Delhi government on Thursday extended the tenure of Home Guards for two years and approved the creation of 7,239 new posts.
A member of the Delhi Home Guards will be able serve for nine years.
The government said that over 2,200 Home Guards, who were to retire in Feburary 2016, would immediately benefit .
The current strength of Delhi Home Guards is 10,285. It is set to go up by 7,239.
"The decision also aims at ensuring maximum safety and security for the citizens of Delhi, particularly women," a Delhi government statement said.
"The two year extension of tenure will ensure a better motivation, discipline and performance within the force, and citizen of Delhi will be benefited by their huge experience as they are going to serve for longer periods," added the statement.
Home Guards are a volunteer body that is assigned various duties related to public security and safety.
They are governed by the Bombay Home Guards Act, 1947, as extended to Delhi.
