Delhi Metro travellers faced a tough time Friday when a metro station was shut down for almost an hour after a fire broke out in a shop within the station premises, an official said.

The busy Kashmere Gate Metro Station was shut down from 1.40 p.m. to 2.29 p.m. after smoke filled the station's underground platform area.

"No interchange facility was available at the Kashmere Gate Metro Station due to the smoke caused by the fire which broke out in a shop at the concourse level of the underground section of the station," a Delhi Metro official earlier said.

However, the official said that though trains were passing through the station, they were made to skip the station's elevated platform for half-an-hour from 2 p.m. and the station's underground section from 1.40 p.m. to 2.29 p.m.

"This was just a precautionary measure. No damage has been reported," the official told IANS.

"The incident did not cause any injury or casualty. The fire was extinguished at 2.10 p.m. following which the services were restored after smoke extraction," the official added.

An enquiry has been ordered into the incident.
