A Delhi Police constable who doesn't know how to swim, jumped into a 10-foot deep canal and saved a boy from drowning Tuesday.
The incident occurred around 12.50 p.m. in the Kalyanpuri area of east Delhi.
Head Constables Tez Singh Nagar and Surendra Singh with constable Pawan Tomar -- all deployed in a Police Control Room (PCR) van -- were moving in the area when a motorbike rider informed them that a boy was drowning in the canal.
"Though they did not know how to swim, Tomar and Nagar rushed to save the child. They took a rope from a nearby scrap dealer's shop. Tomar tied one end of the rope around his waist, gave the other end to Nagar and jumped into the canal," said a police officer.
"Tomar somehow managed to catch the boy, who was being swept away by the water current, and rescued him," said the officer.
The boy, identified as Funtoos, a rag picker, was rushed to the Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Hospital, where his condition was stated to be out of danger.
Funtoos said he fell into the water while picking rag on the bank of the canal.
