A Delhi Police traffic constable has been booked by the vigilance branch of the police for accepting a bribe of Rs.200 from a van driver and letting him go without issuing a ticket.

The constable, identified as Rajbir, has been booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act after the van driver told a vigilance team that a constable took Rs.200 from him as bribe on Wednesday at Shankar Road area in central Delhi.

"The constable was found guilty during a surprise check conducted by a special surveillance team of vigilance branch. He was booked on charges of corruption," said Additional C.P. (Vigilance) Alok Kumar.

Alok Kumar said the vigilance team noticed that some traffic police personnel had stopped three vehicles for checking on Ridge Road.

"After passing the traffic check point, the vigilance team interacted with those drivers. One of the drivers informed them that a traffic police constable had taken Rs.200 from him and issued no challan," he said.

The driver informed the vigilance team that the constable threatened him with a ticket for carrying excess passengers.

"On asking the amount of challan, the traffic constable told the driver that a court challan will cost him Rs.4,000 while cash challan will be issued for Rs.2,000. When the driver requested, the constable took Rs.200 from him and did not issue any challan," Alok Kumar said.
