Dell EMC leads global server revenue market in Q4 2017: Gartner

Global server revenue increased 25.7 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2017 while shipments grew 8.8 per cent Year-over-Year, with Dell EMC leading the market, Gartner said on Thursday.

Based on revenue, Dell EMC and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) were neck-and-neck with 19.4 per cent and 19.3 per cent market share respectively in the fourth quarter of 2017.

"Server growth was driven by relatively strong economies for the quarter across the globe," Jeffrey Hewitt, Research Vice President at Gartner, said in a statement.

In 2017, global server shipments grew 3.1 per cent and server revenue increased 10.4 per cent as compared against 2016.

Dell EMC experienced strong growth in the fourth quarter at 39.9 per cent while HPE grew 5.5 per cent, according to the market research firm.

Inspur Electronics experienced the strongest growth at 127.8 per cent.

"This was a somewhat surprising quarter because the strength was exhibited in a variety of positive server shipment and revenue mixes in almost all geographies," Hewitt added.

The x86 server market increased in revenue by 23.7 per cent and shipments were up 8.9 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2017, the market research firm added.
