A day after a minor was allegedly sexually assaulted inside a local BJP office here, union minister Babul Supriyo Saturday said the association of the party should not be "sensationalised" unless there is proof of the accused being a party worker and stressed it should not be politicised.
Supriyo said the crime should be in focus instead of its location.
A five-year-old girl was sexually assaulted inside a local Bharatiya Janata Party office at Behala, in southwest Kolkata Friday, police said.
"It is about atrocities against women, it should not assume political colour as has become a habit of West Bengal. The crime should be highlighted, not where it has happened. Don't sensationalise the party unless it has been proved that a party worker has done the crime," he said.
Supriyo asserted the accused should be brought to justice and if it is established the accused belongs to a particular political party, then it should be condemned.
"It does not send any political message. It was a deserted building which unfortunately happens to be a BJP office but we should not bring political colour in this as the incident is so very grave.

"One demented mind decided to use the seclusion of the office to do his crime. He should be brought to justice. If it is proved that the person belongs to any political party it should be highly condemned," Supriyo told the media here.
Police said the girl is undergoing treatment in a hospital. The accused has been sent to judicial custody till Feb 16 by a Juvenile Justice Board Saturday.
"The accused, a 16-year-old boy, is the neighbour of the girl. The incident happened inside the office. She had bleeding injuries in her private parts according to doctors," Deputy Commissioner of Police, South West Division, Rashid Munir Khan told IANS Saturday.
