Drugs are being grown along hillsides on the border in Maharashtra and the police in the neighbouring state have already been alerted, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the Goa legislative assembly Friday.

Parrikar also said that when he was studying at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai, drugs were grown on the terraces of the campus buildings.

"We have alerted the Maharashtra Police for possible plantation...Some people across the border are growing it," Parrikar said.

The chief minister, a former alumnus of IIT-Mumbai, also said that cultivation of drugs like ganja or hashish was not too difficult and that it was a common practice to grow drugs at his alma mater in Mumbai.

"When I was at IIT, there were instances where they used to grow drugs on the terraces," Parrikar said.
