The Delhi University on Friday asked 23 students to furnish the reasons for defacing several buildings on the campus and elsewhere during last year's election campaign, asking why they should not be punished.
This comes after the Delhi High Court issued a showcause notice to the student candidates on the issue two day ago.
In a letter issued by the Dean of Students' Welfare office, the students -- including all four DU Students' Union office-bearers -- were told to respond to the showcause notice by February 15.
They were asked to explain "why punitive action should not be initiated against them for the acts of defacement of public property".
A lawsuit was filed against the candidates for putting up posters, littering the roads with flyers and other campaign material -- a brazen violation of Lyngdoh guidelines for student elections -- during their election campaign, an exercise which concluded on September 13 last year.
