Eastern Army Commander reviews Manipur security situation

Eastern Army Commander Lt. Gen. Praveen Bakshi completed a two-day trip to Manipur on Thursday to review the security situation ahead of the assembly polls slated to be held on March 4 and 8.

On his arrival in Manipur on Wednesday, the army commander was received by the Spear Corps Commander Lt. Gen. Anil Chauhan who then accompanied him on an aerial recce of NH-37.

Lt. Gen. Chauhan also briefed the commander on the prevailing security situation, a defence ministry spokesman said.

Lt. Gen. Bakshi visited important locations in the state including Gaidimganj, Bishenpur, Senapati and Mantripukhri where he was briefed by the General Officer Commanding of the Red Shield Division, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South) and local commanders on the security challenges and the measures being implemented to ensure a conducive atmosphere for conducting free and fair elections.

The General Officer appreciated the synergy among the Army, Assam Rifles, Manipur Police and Central Armed Paramilitary Force in the region that is critical to conduct of elections and restoration of normalcy.

The Army Commander interacted with officers and men and expressed satisfaction at the high levels of operational preparedness being maintained.

He exhorted the forces to conduct people-friendly operations while remaining alert to the threats posed by the insurgents.
