The historic Eden Gardens seems on way to hosting a sell-out crowd for the Indian Premier League (IPL) opener between defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Mumbai Indians (MI) on Wednesday.

"85 percent of the tickets have been sold. There are two more days left for the game, so one can expect it to have a sell-out crowd," said a KKR source on Monday.

Long queues could be seen in front of the Mohammedan Sporting Club tent with some eager supporters asking if they were still available.

With a capacity of around 67,000 spectators, Eden Gardens has been called "cricket's answer to the Colosseum". It comes third after the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and the ANZ Stadium - located in the Sydney Olympic Park - in terms of capacity.

Eden Gardens, one of the premier grounds in India, hosted its first Test in 1934 and its first One-Day International in 1987 - when India faced Pakistan.
