An Egyptian court Saturday handed death sentences to five extremists for killing a policeman in Giza.

Two other convicts were given 25-year jail terms in the attack that occurred at a church in Giza in January, Xinhua reported citing state-run Ahram news website.

The Giza Criminal Court also convicted the defendants of other terrorist charges committed from Oct 2013 to late Jan 2014 against security personnel in revenge for the ouster of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi by the military in July 2013.

"Establishing and operating a terrorist group" and "assaulting police and military personnel" were among the charges upheld by the court against the convicts.

Since the powerful military ousted the Brotherhood's Morsi last year, the country's first democratically-elected president, authorities have been waging a massive crackdown on the group which it designated a terrorist group, leaving nearly 1,000 dead while thousands others have been arrested.

Also Saturday, militants shot dead a police recruit and injured two others in Fayoum province, south of the capital Cairo.
