An Egyptian police brigadier-general was killed Wednesday when an explosive device went off under his private car in October 6 City of Giza province, media reported.

Ahmed Zaki was killed outside his home in the suburbs of western Cairo, Xinhua reported citing state-run Nile TV.

Since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi by the army last July, a wave of explosions have hit security personnel and their premises in the restive Sinai peninsula, but lately such attacks have shifted to the capital and Nile Delta cities.

A recent government report put the death toll from such attacks at around 500, with most of the victims being soldiers and police personnel. The Al Qaeda-inspired Ansar Beit al-Maqdis group has claimed responsibility for most of the attacks.

On April 2, the head of Giza's security headquarters was killed and five others injured in two blasts outside Cairo University.
