One man was trampled to death after a wild elephant entered a village near Assam's Kaziranga National Park Monday, police said.

The elephant went on a rampage after residents of Lakhipur village tried to drive it away. The deceased was identified as Bulu Gogoi.

Eight houses in the village were destroyed by the animal.

Man-elephant conflict has been on the rise in Assam. Forest officials and greens blame it on falling forest cover.

Elephants have killed about 10 people in Assam's Udalguri district this year.
