A 134-run seventh wicket partnership between Joe Root (77) and Jos Buttler (70) helped the hosts to consolidate their grip over the match.
But two wickets from Pankaj Singh, who finally took a wicket after bowling a total of 69.2 overs in the third and fourth Test, towards the end of the session took some of the momentum away from the English.
