The NHRC Wednesday directed the Chhattisgarh government to enhance the monetary relief to Rs.1 lakh each to 16 people who lost their eyesight in cataract surgeries conducted at a community health centre in the state.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has said that the Chhattisgarh government should pay another Rs.50,000 each to the patients in addition to a similar amount it paid to the patients earlier.
The surgeries were conducted Dec 31, 2012, at the Bagbehra community health centre in Dhamtari district of Chhattisgarh.
Taking cognizance of media reports, the commission observed the patients were also administered substandard medicines.
The commission has asked the state chief secretary to submit a compliance report along with proof of payment within eight weeks besides a status report on the disciplinary action initiated against the three doctors who conducted the surgeries.
