Brazilian presidential candidate Eduardo Campos, who died in a plane crash Wednesday, will likely be replaced by former Environment Minister Marina Silva, the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB) said Friday.

"It is likely that Marina will be the most possible candidate, but we will make that decision after Aug 20," Xinhua quoted PSB President Roberto Amaral as saying.

Silva appears to be the natural choice, given she ran for president in the 2010 elections as the Green Party candidate and came in third, garnering more than 19 million votes.

However, the nomination could ruffle feathers within the PSB, as she is not strictly within the socialist party ranks.

The party has roughly over a week to either declare a new candidate or align itself with another party and back its candidate.

Eduardo Campos died Wednesday morning in a plane crash in Santos in southeastern state of Sao Paulo.

Campos's plane crashed into a residential area, killing all seven people on board.
