Habib Essid Friday took oath as Tunisia's new prime minister, the latest step in the country's democratic transition after the 2011 uprising.

Essid and his government were sworn in before President Beji Caid Essebsi at a ceremony held near the Presidential Palace in Carthage, Tunis, Xinhua news agency reported.

Essid was handed over power from outgoing interim prime minister Mehdi Jomaa.

The Tunisian parliament approved Essid's nominated cabinet led by the secular Nidaa Tounes Party Thursday.

The new government includes both secular and Islamist politicians.

The first nominated cabinet of Essid, announced at the end of January 2015, was heavily criticised, especially for eliminating the Islamist party of Ennahdha from the line-up.

However, in the second suggested cabinet list, Ennahdha and Afek Tounes parties were included, in addition to Nidaa Tounes, the UPL and independent figures.
