Former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott has promised to pay for a marble table in his old office that was found broken a day after he lost an internal party ballot for leadership within his party and in the government.

Abbott hosted a party for his staff and colleagues on September 14 after a rebellion in the Liberal Party saw him being replaced by challenger Malcolm Turnbull, EFE reported on Tuesday.

"It was my event so I take responsibility for it," said Abbott.

The Italian marble centre table, bought in 1980 for 428 Australian dollars ($311), was found broken in half the next day outside the cabinet anteroom where the party was held.

According to media speculations, the table broke after someone climbed atop it and danced or jumped on it.
