A retired Delhi policeman was killed while his wife and daughter-in-law were left critically injured by a criminal's accomplices who fired upon the family indiscriminately early Monday to avenge his killing three hours earlier, police said.

Police said two armed men, whose identity was not revealed for investigation purposes, barged into retired head constable Hari Kishan's house in Chhawla in west Delhi around 1.30 a.m. and opened fire on him and his family.

Kishan, his wife Kamla, 58, and daughter-in-law Sharmeela, 28, suffered critical bullet injuries in the attack.

"All the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital where Kishan was declared dead while his wife and daughter-in-law are being treated and stated to be critical," Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) R.A. Sanjeev told IANS.

The officer said the attack was in retaliation for a murder committed by the head constable's son Naththe Singh, a wanted criminal in his 30s.

The DCP said Singh shot dead a criminal Sunil alias Doctor in Chhawla around 10.30 p.m. on Sunday after a brief argument with him and his family members over some monetary issue.

"Sunil's family members and some of his associates then reached Singh's house and fired indiscriminately to kill his whole family," the DCP told IANS.

The officer said two separate murder cases were registered and a hunt had been launched to nab Singh and those who fired on his family members killing his father, who retired from Delhi Police last year.
