With AFC Ajax losing 0-1 to PSV Eindhoven, Feyenoord need only one victory to clinch their first Dutch football championship since 1999 as the Rotterdam club inched closer to the title beating Vitesse 2-0.
Three days after reaching the semi-finals of the Europa League after an extra time match against Schalke 04 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, Ajax on Sunday had to be at their best to beat PSV in Eindhoven. The team was not at its best and looked tired. Jurgen Locadia handed PSV the 1-0 win with a stunning free-kick in the 25th minute, reports Xinhua news service.
Feyenoord had expected a difficult afternoon in Arnhem against Vitesse, but the league leaders decided the match at an early stage. Nicolai Jorgensen opened the scoring from a rebound at close range in the 10th minute and the Danish topscorer of the Eredivisie produced his 21st goal of the season with a header in the 28th minute.
With their 25th win of the season, Feyenoord are now on 79 points with two match rounds remaining. Ajax are second on 75 points and reigning champions PSV are third with 72 points. Feyenoord can secure the championship with a win in the next match round, on May 7 away against Rotterdam neighbours Excelsior.
Also on Sunday, FC Utrecht strengthened their fourth place with a 1-0 win over Roda JC Kerkrade. Zakaria Labyad became the match winner with a free-kick in the 87th minute.
