At least five kidnapped staff of the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) were released in the province of Ghazni on Friday, an Afghan police official said.

"As soon as the provincial officials were aware of the abduction, efforts were put in place by the officials and tribal elders to secure the safe release of the abductees. Following the mediation of local elders, the five were freed in Chahar Deah area of Waghaz district," Xinhua quoted a senior police official as saying.

Unidentified armed men in Ghazni kidnapped the aid workers along a roadway on Tuesday. Further details about the kidnapping were not clear.

The aid agency has suspended its operations in the province in the wake of the abductions.

Ghazni and the neighbouring Zabul province have been the scene of hostage taking along the main roads over the past one year.
