Five killed in rebel attacks on police in Turkey

At least five people were killed and 24 injured in three attacks by Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) members on Turkish police in southeastern Turkey, media reported on Saturday.

A statement from the Tunceli governor's office said a group of fighters from PKK, attacked the Nazimiye police department building and Nazimiye district governor' s office building with guns and rockets on Friday night, Xinhua reported.

A policeman was killed during the attacks and two PKK members were killed in the ensuing clash, the statement added.

Meanwhile, the PKK rebels also opened fire on a group of police officers outside a state hospital in the Sanliurfa province late Friday.

Two police officers were injured in the attack and both then died in the hospital, local news reported Saturday.

Another attack on riot police in southeastern Mardin province late Friday injured at least 24 people, including 10 policemen, security sources said.

According to the state-run Anadolu Agency, over 60 security personnel have been killed, reportedly by the PKK, as tensions in Turkey's southeastern region flared up since a bombing linked to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant on July 20 in Suruc, claimed the lives of 34 people.
