Former Czech international footballer and English club Newcastle United's goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek has died following cardiac arrest, a media report said.

Srnicek died at the age of 47 on Tuesday. He suffered the cardiac attack on December 20 while out running near his house here, reported The Independent on Wednesday.

He represented the Czech Republic in 49 matches between 1994 and 2001. He was Newcastle's custodian between 1991 and 1998 and then again was in the club for a brief stint in 2006-07.

Srnicek was placed into a medically induced coma upon his arrival at hospital, but his agent, Steve Wraith, announced his tragic death nine days after his heart attack.

Wraith said in a statement: "It is with deep sadness that I have to announce the passing of former Newcastle United player Pavel Srnicek."

"Pavel suffered a cardiac arrest before the Christmas period in his home country and had been in an induced coma in hospital with his close family around his bedside. Despite the best medical attention, the final brain scans on Monday showed irreversible damage and the decision had to be taken to switch off the life support machine."

"Pav passed away on the afternoon of Tuesday 29th December 2015 with his family by his side."
