Four people died and 24 were injured on Thursday due to electrocution, when a vehicle belonging to Velankanni Church in Tirunelveli district came into contact with a low hanging live wire, said police.
The car was carrying the deity as part of the church festival.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, expressing her grief at the tragedy that killed four persons, announced a compensation of Rs 100,000 to the families of the dead, Rs 50,000 to those who were seriously injured and Rs 25,000 to other injured persons.
