Four held for assaulting judge in Bengal

Four people were arrested and sent to custody for heckling and assaulting a judge in West Bengal's Birbhum district, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Sunday night when Birbhum's Chief Judicial Magistrate Indranil Chatterjee was allegedly roughed up by some youths demanding subscription for Kali Puja.

"We have arrested four people in this connection. They were presented before a court today (Tuesday) and sent to custody," Additional Superintendent of Police Ananda Roy said.

While two of the accused -- Dibyendu Sarkar and Mir Miman -- were sent to police custody for three days, the other two accused -- Mir Suman and Mohammad Hasan -- were sent to to 14 days judicial custody.

According to police, the judicial officer was travelling in his car when a gang of about 20-odd youths stopped the vehicle demanding subscription for Kali Puja.

Chatterjee's clothes were torn by the youths who also pushed and shoved his guard accompanying him in the car.
