France football coach Didier Deschamps acknowledged that Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema made a mistake in allegedly getting involved in a plot to blackmail his national teammate Mathieu Valbuena with a sex tape.
Deschamps did not want to go into details or justify Benzema's position but stressed that it is a matter concerning the relationship between the two players, reports Efe.
Deschamps did not rule out Benzema's participation in the national team during the upcoming Euro 2016, which will be held next summer in France, claiming that over the next six months many developments could take place, pointing out that the final squad for the championship will not be announced until next May.
"And I'm not saying this to defend Karim but today the players have a way of speaking to each other amongst themselves that would have been inconceivable in my day. They have a different language," Deschamps said on Friday.
The Frenchman highlighted the provisional international ban issued by the president of the French Football Federation Noel Le Graet against Benzema until the latter's legal situation is clarified.
He added the decision is in line with an ethical point of view, while he maintains the press is exaggerating the case.
