'Gay' doctor's judicial custody extended

A court here extended the judicial custody of an AIIMS doctor till May 16 in connection with his wife's suicide, sources said on Tuesday.

Priya Vedi, 31, who ended her life following mental harrassment which, she alleged on Facebook, started after her husband learnt that she had become aware of his being a gay.

On Monday, Kamal Vedi, 34, a dermatologist at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here was presented before the court after expiry of his initial 14-day judicial custody, which was extended on Monday till May 16 by Metropolitan Magistrate Sachin Sangwan, court sources said.

Priya Vedi, a senior anaesthetist at AIIMS, allegedly committed suicide by slitting her wrist with a sharp-edged object in a hotel room in central Delhi's Paharganj locality.

Before taking the extreme step, the woman posted a note, narrating her experience with the husband, on her Facebook account. She also left behind a suicide note alleging that her husband was a gay and used to mentally torture her.

Police arrested Kamal on April 19 and booked him under Sections 498A (cruelty) and 304B (dowry death) of the Indian Penal Code.

Police said that Priya Vedi's husband had filed a missing complaint on the evening of April 18, when he failed to contact her on her mobile since morning.

The couple got married five years ago and since then they had been staying at the AIIMS staff quarters in south Delhi, according to police.

Police found Priya Vedi's body during a search operation across several hotels in Paharganj followed by her husband's missing complaint.

The police team also found a suicide note from her room, in which she mentioned her troubled marriage that consequently led to her committing suicide.
