Gender, land, labour issues highlight at fest in Kolkata

In its third year, the Kolkata People's Film Festival (KPFF) beginning here on January 22, 2016 will feature a retrospective of the works of veteran feminist documentary filmmaker Deepa Dhanraj, organisers said on Tuesday.

KPFF is a people-funded, 'free entry' film festival held by West Bengal-based film society People's Film Collective. The fest is a part of 'Cinema of Resistance' movement.

Dhanraj will deliver the keynote address at the inaugural. Four of her documentaries including "Kya Hua is Shahar Ko?" and "The Advocate" will be screened.

Other themes of the fest are documentaries on land and labour issues, structural violence, memory and justice, young adults as well as three feature length fiction films ("Court", "Mor Thengary" and "Chauthi Koot"). Controversial documentary "Caste on the Menu Card" is another highlight of the cinematic gala.

Guest speakers include filmmakers and activists Iffat Fatima, Ajay T G, Subasri Krishnan, Meghnath, Tarun Mishra.

The event will run till January 24 at the Jogesh Mime Academy.
