The government is considering amending rules to make it mandatory for IPS officers to complete specified number of domain expertise training programmes before their promotion to various ranks, the Lok Sabha was informed on Tuesday.

In a written reply, Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said the domain expertise training programme for the Indian Police Service (IPS) officers to be promoted as Deputy Inspector General, Inspector General and Additional Director General should be of at least one week.

"The matter is under examination in consultation with stakeholders and modalities are under finalisation," the minister said.

He said that the government was also considering to amend the relevant rules to incorporate the provision relating to completion of stipulated number of years in service after completion of probation and criteria of physical fitness as mandatory measures for promotion of the IPS officers to various grades.
