A militant attempt to attack a police picket set up for protection of a minority community in south Kashmir's Pulwama district was foiled Friday, a police official said.

"An alert guard thwarted an attempt by militants to attack a police picket, set up to guard minorities, in village Quil in Pulwama," a senior police officer told IANS. Pulwama is 30 km from Sringar.

"The sentry on duty noticed some suspicious movement near the picket. He fired, but the militants managed to escape leaving behind a rifle on the spot," said the official.

He said police have launched a search operation in the area.
